Wood & Douglas receives Queen’s Award for Enterprise

On 21st April, the occasion of The Queen’s 87th birthday, we were delighted to receive The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category.

This award is the most prestigious business award available to UK companies and recognises the international nature of our business.  The selection process is rigorous and only a small number of companies entered for the award receive them.

Wood & Douglas now trades in around 30 countries across the world and more than 50% of our revenues come from overseas business.

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise represents a fantastic endorsement of the company.  However this would not have been possible without the support of our team of talented people, our suppliers and, most of all, our customers.  We thank you all and hope you are as excited as us by this news.

We always endeavour to never specify what we cannot measure.

Utilities

Businesses in the utilities market operate in an increasingly complex environment.

They need to ensure the security of remote assets, manage geographically diverse operations and plan and deliver reliable services over increasingly complex wired and wireless networks.

Radio transmitter and receiver products and services enable utilities to more effectively measure, monitor and control operations. Whether it is the remote monitoring of reservoirs and sub stations assets, or new technology energy monitoring and control, wireless communications enables utility companies to develop more effective and reliable infrastructure network services.

Wood & Douglas has worked with leading utility companies such as Thames Water, United Utilities and Western Power to develop and implement robust wireless services helping utility companies deliver a more effective and efficient business solution.

Homeland Security

The events of and since September 11th 2001 have and continue to reshape the security of the modern World.

Governments across the globe have had to develop new and more effective means by which to protect their citizens.  Wireless communication has enabled new forms and techniques for intelligence gathering that were previously unimaginable.

Wood & Douglas work with a number of Homeland Security agencies around the world, helping them to develop new means of remotely monitoring, gathering and managing information using radio communication technology.

Wood & Douglas radio equipment is often deployed in extreme environmental conditions and will be expected to delivery HD quality video images, digital encryption, low quiescent standby power consumption with a low payload mass.

These are complex and contradicting operational radio requirements, often life critical, and from demanding clients.

Emergency Services

Wireless technology has always been a critical resource for the emergency services.  Radio communications gives the absolute flexibility required by these life critical public services.

Wood & Douglas has enhanced their usage of the radio spectrum by providing specialist wireless transceiver hardware into key narrow niche areas.  Remote telemetry monitoring of fire crew breathing apparatus and major incident on scene real time video are typical examples of where our radio engineering skills have been successfully applied to give emergency services personnel the tools to do a more effective and safer job.

An increasing number of emergency services are consulting with Wood & Douglas’ radio engineers to develop new ways of communicating through wireless technology.  Our experienced team's primary objective is to create wireless connected services that deliver the reliability and flexibility that emergency services can trust.

Health Care

More than half of the population born today will live to the age of 100 or more. As the population ages, the need to manage serious but non-life threatening illnesses for longer will continue to grow. The healthcare market will rely on new thinking to develop smart solutions to the challenges of tomorrow.

Central to this new thinking will be the smart application of wireless technology to allow healthcare professionals to discretely monitor their patients whether in sheltered care or at home. Developments in wireless technology will ensure that people who need the support of medical staff receive it quickly and effectively.

Wood & Douglas has supported a number of RF enabled suppliers to this market with cost effect OEM radio communication connectivity for integration into wireless patient monitoring systems.  The Company’s high quality reliable radio equipment is ideally suited to creating new ways to care for the needs of the population in the 21st century.

Transport

By the end of 2010, more than 55% of the world’s population were living in cities. The increasing urbanisation of society creates new challenges for transportation within and between metropolises. Environmental concerns are also driving new transportation systems - to deliver a better experience more sustainably.

Wireless technology is heavily embedded in transportation.  Radio keyless entry lets you enter your car. Integrated public transportation systems provide wireless timetable displays. Traffic light priority signalling helps public transport flow smoother. The list for the application of radio is endless and growing.

Wood & Douglas’ RF engineers have designed and developed radio leading edge services for major players in the transportation industry. Radio transceivers deliver data messaging datagrams. COFDM digital video links provide real time high quality images for logistics and security.  Behind many key radio system suppliers, the communication engine is a Wood & Douglas wireless communication product.

Exploration Services

Mining, quarrying and offshore exploration for oil and gas remain critical industries for the provision of energy supplies, precious metals and other raw materials.  Exploration services take place in some of the most challenging and hostile environments where safety, security and reliability are essential prerequisites to successful projects.

Reliable radio communications can be extremely difficult in these circumstances, particularly underground, at sea or over vast radio propagation distances.  Wood & Douglas specialises in delivering wireless communications in such challenging RF environments.  Projects have included a high bit rate COFDM digital data links from ship to shore, video capture and delivery for the oil and gas industries,  radio telemetry transceivers for seismic survey and wireless perimeter fencing for large area open cast mine security.

Delivering critical wireless applications in such demanding environments requires intelligent RF design and rock solid radio implementation.  Wood & Douglas has proved its capability to combine creative wireless solutions with flawless RF execution.
